Number 9:  The fountain
Spoiler-free plot: A doctor played by Hugh Jackman tries to save his wife. Also time travel? (some of these are hard.)
Why it’s so weird (Possible Spoilers) : Okay this one is weird about so many things and i’m gonna try to explain it as best as I can.  Keep in mind all of these things are going on at the same time even if I’m not writing it as such.  This is in my opinion one of Darren Aronofsky’s best films. Okay so Hugh Jackman plays a doctor that is on the verge of curing a form of cancer that his wife, played by Rachel Weisz, has.  Weisz has been sick for awhile but is writing a story about a conquistador, again played by Jackman, looking for the fountain of youth. Weisz also plays the queen that sends the conquistador off. While looking for the cure, Jackman accidentally find the cure to death, which ties in thematically with the fountain of youth motif. But before he can find it, Weisz dies of the cancer.  We are also told the story of Jackman, now 500 years in the future, as he tries to find the cure to dying.  He travels in a ship that holds the burial ground of Weisz and the tree that has grown from that spot.  Jackman thinks if he reaches a dying star (that also ties the three stories) then he will be able to bring her back to life.  Oh man, are you tired? Cause I am! That story is as you can see complicated and I know of other people who completely disagree with this but this is what I think.  The themes are loss, death, and most importantly a life’s journey.  Each character is searching for something that is probably not there and it deals with how each person is affected by this.  There is also the theme of love and what we do for it. It’s a great film and if anything else, it’s beautiful to look at.  Give it a try but I will say you have to wanna watch it.  It’s an intense movie but a great one.
